As we talked about this during today's press conference, would you rather want to start off in Cleft and have the logical progression, or stay with the way it currently is and start off in Relto scratching your head?

I will just be happy to get back in the game. How about we focus on the real issues and not suggest programming changes of this sort.

Why did I vote Cleft? Because it was the way I started playing in the off line version, and it just makes sense, as well. Gives you a gentle nudge on how to do this, and then whoosh, you are at Relto. Oh okay I get this, is the feeling I can recall I had that first time. Then to link to the hood from there, and see your first friends and be so nervous to talk to them! LOL, so fun.

I know quite a few others who won't be commenting, but who would say Cleft, as well.

(In the press conference chat, several people chimed in in favor of "cleft" and a few for "relto". That wasn't a complete survey -- just the few people who spoke up before we all realized we should take it to the forums before the chat was completely sidetracked!)

(Also, Chogon said in the chat that MORE will start as a clone of MOUL, which means starting in Relto. But they'll think about whether changes are needed.)

Now, my opinion:

In MOUL, I always thought that starting in the Cleft was *more logical*, but starting in Relto was *better*. Better for new players, who stood a *much* better chance of reaching GoG and help instead of giving up. Better for old players who create new avatars (which we do, for many reasons).

(In the single-player Uru, those reasons don't exist, and so the Cleft is clearly a better starting point.)

And for MORE? Well, we won't have as many new players. But there will be some, and we hope more will arrive. And for old players, well, the Cleft *isn't* our introduction to Uru any more -- we already know that story. We're not newcomers. It is not, for us, logical to arrive that way.

So I have to say that MORE should stick with the Relto as the entry point.

(Maybe the intro movie should change to show you finding/picking up a Relto book? I realize that Cyan doesn't have the resources for video production, but if it can be swung, it seems like the ideal compromise.)

What I'd like to see at some point maybe WAY down the line is the intro area still being on the surface (either Cleft or Volcano caldera), but also being public, so that it can be staffed by the Guild of Greeters and people can have immediate access to help, without having to stumble through Relto, their starting 'hood (visitors defaulted to GoG, but paying people didn't, which I don't think was terribly helpful), Gahreesen, the Nexus, and finally knowing about the GoG 'hood to find help there.

[edit] In the meantime, I agree with everything belford just said. All the way down to a less cryptic intro (even though MOUL's isn't cryptic, it doesn't exactly spell much out in "how I shoot book" terms either ;))

Cleft, the starting at Relto bugged me.

I could understand the desire to get players into the community aspect more but in doing so cause issues story wise. Where did new players get Relto books etc.

I suggested in my blog post Concept - Uru Live Beginning on how the game could still start at the Cleft and have the community aspect right off the bat.

I totally agree with Tweek.
I vote cleft because the secret true power of all Myst's is the history .And history must be accurate in order to be great.
Of course afterwards it will be easier and better when we link in game to the relto .

I voted Relto but I should have looked at Tweek's idea first. I like that a lot! It made no sense that the Cleft wasn't public.

I have changed my mind as well....... it is funny how the ONLY place that is publicly accessable on our planet (desert is on the surface) is not meant to be shared, that doesn't make sense. (Sorry Yeesha :oops: lol)

My prime concern is new people, us "oldies" can enter the Cavern from anywhere I'm sure :) But if somebody (Greeter) awaits new people in the desert, and helps them find their way, then yes, the desert is the logical place to start.

If I remember correctly, Alahmnat(?) also had a proposal some time ago with an uncanny likeness to yours. Two independently similar ideas must be good ones.

My vote is for the Cleft, assuming it's public, where the called gather.
