I discovered a few days ago that the Japanese word for tree is ki (木) . I am wondering if calling the communication device that everyone has a "ki" was just a coincidence, or is it an intentional tie-in to the "tree" theme in Uru? What are your thoughts on this?

KI is the D'ni numeral for "3" but nobody knows why the number three is significant. uru puts a focus on language so perhaps this is a theory? dunno...

Last I knew it was because when the DRC found the KI that we use now, it had the D'ni number 3 on the back which looks like KI.

I assumed it was just a pun on the word "key" more than anything else

If there's one thing that the KI is a key of, it's frustration :P

yeah, it's not an intuitive interface that's apparent. but yeah, a DRC journal states the D'ni numeral for 3 is on the back of the devices. but we never see the back of the ki. and you're right, i think the pronounciation, "key" is analogous to it's use in opening doors and establishing links.

From the in-character / in-cavern information we have, there is no relationship between 'ki' and 'tree'. But that doesn't exclude the possibility that it might have had that meaning out-of-character / out-of-cavern when the name was conceived.

I think Cyan likes to select names that have multiple interpretations and meanings. Certainly, the name "Uru" was chosen quite deliberately. And sometimes, there are coincidences.

Intentional or not, I think it's a lovely connection for us to know about, now. Thanks for sharing that, cjkelly.

I think I shall never see a cross-age meessaging/security/gps/organizer/light/maintenance device as lovely as a tree. Er, ki.

Uhm... :?

My guess is a pun off of the english, but I wouldn't doubt if whomever decided to make the devices named after '3' appreciated the other more subtle connection (what with the heavy analogies to trees the whole way through Uru)
Then again,. maybe it WAS intentional.. I mean, the hand-held trees to stay in touch across the Tree? :D

It's also worth noting that Japanese has another word that's also written as "Ki," that means "air" or "spirit" (with spirit meaning something like "life energy" in this case).

I never thought of that!
(Maybe because I've been pronouncing KI like "key", and it's a bit (but distinctly) different from Japanese pronunciation of tree, "ki(木)".)
Ki has so many meaningsin Japanese and must have more in other languages, so it's more likely a coincidence...
But I also see a similarity between "three" and "tree" !

btw, 木 is one of my favorite kanjis.
two 木 make 林(woods)
three 木 make 森(forest)

I can't see the forest for all the ki's. :D

Personally, I doubt that the KI is actually related to the tree motif. The trees are related to the Grower story (Kadish's belief that he was the Grower, Yeesha's insistence that she's actually the Grower, and her highlighting of Kadish's folly as being emblematic of the moral corruption which had spread throughout D'ni before the fall). The KIs, for all we can tell (if someone can point me somewhere that says differently, please do!), are apparently unrelated to Kadish and definitely unrelated to Yeesha.

The number could mean virtually anything, but it seems far more likely to me that it's a model number of some sort, or an indicator of rank or class, where movers and shakers might have a KI that has a different number on it, but us humble plebeians get a 3.

Then again, maybe (OOC) someone noticed that D'ni 3 looked like "KI" and thought it'd be neat to attach that to something, and they thought that "cavern interface" was too unwieldy a name.

Your theory sounds plausible. Or, perhaps it was originally called the Cavern Interface, and in translating that to D'ni, since there are no hard Cs in the D'ni language, they used the K and made it "Kavern Interface" - KI for short, and then someone noticed that looked like a D'ni three.

Good greif! I thought I was a myst nerd :P

I'm no D'ni linguist but that theory on "Kavern Interface" is quite compelling.
