The demo was done by Headspin as a way to advertise the game engine but it also was based on a game concept of our own. The one line tag was something like Mario64 meets Myst. We showed it around including at the 3dfx Booth at E3 in atlanta. That must have been '98 or something.

Fun fact about that demo. There was a bug where it would only run so long before crashing which made for some awkward show demos. Back at the office people were working on the bug and every day we installed a new version and finally got it fixed before the show was over. We started talking with Cyan about collaborating with them and began working on Dirt.

Poor simon got left in the dustbin. His full name is IIRC Simon Venture.

Hitting the Tab key will chance Simon into Spider.
But Spider cannot do much. Or you must like the strange effects when you try to move Spider.
Also had some fun playing the Dirt_dbg version.

Anyone know Simon's Last name?

It was revealed in a chat log which I linked earlier in this thread ;)

[Brice] Simon is a sort of Generation X version of Indiana Jones. Part hacker, part extreme sports athlete, he is just as comfortable on an inverted rock climb as he is hacking the IRS Central Database security system. While he has no formal training in martial arts he has watched enough Jackie Chan flixs to execute some cool moves to delight the player. Simon is a wisecracker and the perfect partner for the players trip into the unknown.[/spoiler]

So, does Dirt take an inordinate time to load, or is something just wrong with my setup? I installed nGlide and then ran Dirt.exe

The log seems to make it appear that everything does load, however it hangs at "Starting main loop"

I'm running 7 x64 for reference.

So like Myst Online then?

So, Chogon, if nothing ever dies around here, any hope of seeing playable / movies of DIRT stuff? Yup, we're hungry :P

Sorry it's not fancy. I'm not great, made it quickly, and haven't been using Photoshop because...it's complicated. Sorry about that.

It only ran on Voodoo graphics cards, that I'm sure no one has laying around anymore.

Funny you should say that, since I recently came across an old Voodoo 3 card... still works, I know this because I had to install it in someone's computer for a day while their actual video card was out for replacement.

You know, I received a Voodoo 3 video card as a Christmas gift back in 2000, because I needed one to run realMYST at a reasonable level... mmm, nostalgia. :)

I havent figured out how to do the puzzle with the obelisks but it obviously has something to do with reflecting the light across them. This puzzle seems to be optional though as I progressed past it through different rooms which eventually prevented me from backtracking.

It took me a while to figure that one out. And once I got the light beams to bounce across the obelisks, I wasn't quite sure what I was supposed to do with the "reward", since I didn't seem to be able to unhook it :? Maybe it's just a puzzle for it's own sake (this is a demo after all).

Swimming in the cellar under the observatory seems to be pretty hazardous. Using the down arrow key seems to submerge Simon permanently, and even if you manage to swim there doesn't appear to be any way out :( . Looks a bit unfinished down there.

I've found one other working command instruction: 'reset' - which does exactly the same as pressing R, so not the most helpful thing to find  However, typing 'set' results in the message "Ambiguous or unimplemented command"; this is different from the usual "Unrecognized command" message, which suggests you may be able to 'set something' if you can figure out what the valid somethings are  I never found the "stats" that Brice suggested might be there.

I get a few weird renderings around light sources - probably to due with the Glide wrapper and/or my video card.
