It runs fine for me in Win7 64-bit with widescreen. And some of you may have noticed this; the mouse DOES do something... if you right-click while exploring, you'll bring up a display showing the X and Y coordinates of your cursor as you mouse around the screen. Also, clicking on an object will show its identity. Just FYI - now to figure out how to solve that chapel puzzle...

Thanks for making this available, Chogon! It's downright fascinating.

Like tanshin, I downloaded and extracted the dirt files, then installed the Glide program, and I get a full screen white page that says "Plasma loading" when I run dirt.exe, but the game doesn't move from there.

Anyone have an idea about the problem? Win 7 64 bit.

Cheers,

Dadguy

Dang, if you're having the same problem there's no hope at all O.O

I have Win 7 64-bit and downloaded this awhile back. I have never had any trouble loading it. I believe I installed the wrapper Chogon linked to before I even tried it, though I don't remember for sure.

Edit: I had gotten to the chapel when I first downloaded the game and set the game aside for awhile. I went back today and managed to solve the rest of it (The "ending" was amusing). However, I skipped a few buggy areas such as the swimming, and I could not really do much with that glitchy Spider. There may be other places I skipped without realizing it too. I'm curious how many others have finished the game, assuming they could run it.

In the end, I had fun! I'll bet the Myst-like quality of this demo was really helpful in sparking Cyan's interest. I know I already said this, but if Cyan has a copy of the old single player DIRT that could run like this demo (perhaps the last build compiled before they changed direction), I would LOVE to get my hands on it and so would many others. Though I supposed Cyan might still be keeping it under wraps in hopes that they can put the rest of the unique content into Uru someday.

Thing is, whatever DIRT was, it was vastly different than Uru. So it'd probably be safe to release it. I'd love to see some of the areas in the game, even if the builds are buggy, crashy and the Ages are incomplete.

BTW - has anyone done a walk-through for this little gem? I've become completely stymied in three places and was just wondering . . .

Maybe we shouldn't get into details in the spoiler-free section. Should we open another thread? Either way, where are you stuck morwyn?

I get stuck in the lower level of the silo (swimming hazard - I understand everyone gets stuck there), I'm stuck moving the four plinths in the long hall (I think I solved it but how do you know?), and I'm stuck at the globe puzzle (someone mentioned hearing a sound, but it's completely silent here for me) with no way out of the area. Since this is a spoiler-free area, if anyone could suggest a better thread area, I'll be happy to take this there.

Cool stuff. I like looking at old relics like these.

Has anyone put up any DIRT videos yet?
From what I can tell, there is nothing you can really do in the silo as it seems very unfinished. Not to give too much away, but a certain reward is made available when you solve the plinth puzzle. However, from what I can tell you cannot actually take the reward (I assume it was not yet programmed). Regardless, you will know when it's solved.

The globe puzzle is tricky and there are a couple parts to it so I'm not sure what part you are stuck on. The first part involves you needing to have the earth and moon in the correct position. There is no sound or anything obvious that happens as soon as you do. Again, I hope I am not spoiling too much.
Nothing new has been released regarding DIRT, but perhaps we will get something eventually. I really want to see it too, and perhaps even play it. :D

As of the globe puzzle, dearest EO and morwyn, I have to say
...after adjusting the positions of the celestial bodies, I suppose
in a correct way, means being correctly aligned, I hear a beautiful
stroke of a gong, I did this several times to be sure lol...

It could very well be that this coincides with something else instead
of being an accomplishment lol as I see no way after that to get any
further in the game... So, this was the endpoint for me as there was
enough to accomplish up to that point... (I'm glad there are saving
points as I'm still stuck in the chapel haha...) ... :D
And Tomala, in Zardoz initial post you'll find the Degas.rar (a .mov file),
which inspired him to dig deeper into the subject and on page 2 of this
thread, Agenotfound posted a 15 min. YouTube video...
Please, watch it here... This is heavy spoilerish, of course... :D

I think Tomala was talking about DIRT itself, not Degas =)

While the exe is called dirt, Degas isn't the fabled DIRT. =)
Well, I just double checked and the gong only occurs with finishing the final part of the globe puzzle, so if you got it you should be finished with the globe. From my experience, the first part of the puzzle does not give a sound when solved. Also, the gong DOES coincide with something else, though I guess there could be something you have to do in an earlier location as well for it to work. This is all assuming you have the game sounds enabled. By the way, you will know when you reach the end point.
