interestingly, the launcher is showing CAVCON to have reset to 2.0 for December but we have no update here yet.... :?

Looks like it's updated now.

November final CAVCON number landed at 3.0 (donations = 100% of costs), although we were at 4.1 at the prior update (donations = 110% of costs).

I'm guessing that's because costs for the attempted content patch (and rollback) were deducted.

I'm sure that's partly correct but note that there's also been a marked increase in usage since the Obduction KickStarter, which will have increased costs a little over the average set by previous months.

But Cyan isn't using the scalable hosting plans any more, aren't they? Wouldn't that mean server hosting costs should stay fixed?

Actually, the decrease in CAVCON this month is likely due to the update, then the rollback to the previous version to avoid a copyright issue. (Aka programmer/admin labor costs.)

Just my thought in regards to the matter.

...on the other hand, looking only at the figures of Logins etc. for November 2013, compared
to previous month (October) almost 7000 more Logins and 600+ more Unique Users. Not bad!

And seen over the whole year 2013, Nov. had the most Logins ever (39k) and the number
of Unique Users have constantly increased from Jan. to Nov.

The average over the year is aboutish 30700 Logins. Feb. at the lowest at 25k so Nov. is
14k over that! So it's looking good I'd think...

(OHBoy I miss OHBot and his statistics sometimes...)

How do you know all this? Where did you get these statistics?
How do you get access to "the figures"?

It's hard to remember to look back to the first two posts, because when RAWA updates these two posts, we don't get a notification. The clue is usually when the CAVCON number resets for the new month (eg in the launcher) - but this clue led us astray this month!

The only thing they changed was moving from a "pay-as-you-go" scheme for the server instances to a pre-paid scheme, since that was a significantly cheaper basis. Both plans have additional monthly charges based on the volume of data transacted, so more use means more cost. How significant that is obviously depends on the ratio of usage costs to server instance costs - it might make little difference or a big difference, it's hard to say.

I figure any CAVCON 3 and above for this December is a good CAVCON.

Beyond that, in January, I really would like to entertain SERIOUS ideas from community members about what we as a collective whole can do to stabilize the numbers month to month. CAVCON parties now and then may keep us funded, but they keep us on a rollercoaster ride.

I know that we're only part of the equation. I know there are parts of this that our outside of our control. But that's OK. I have faith that if we do our part, our best, to make things a more even ride... our dedication will draw the attention that it deserves.
