You're right.

So:

Me personally, I'd be willing to give it a go, especially if a known and respected community member were at the helm, making sure the donations went into Cyan's pocket and not their own.
Or a known and respected member of Cyan team, not as a Cyan member but as community member.

Actually, another benefit of such a system is that if all the donations were collated and then donated at the end of the month, more money would get through to Cyan than if all those donations were given separately. Based on that, I'd say it's a great idea, if it can be done.

If Cyan started to run the server on a commercial basis (which is what a monthly fee means) they would have to pay taxes for any penny people pay for it. I may not be an expert of American taxation systems. But I daresay it would be more expensive than what PayPal gets from the donations. And I haven't even started with the can of legal worms you open when you run on a commercial basis.

Cyan is a for profit business, not a non-profit. At least AFAIK they did not form a 501 whatever non-profit for MOULa operation. So, whatever money they receive they pay taxes on. They can offset income with expenses. But, any positive income is taxable.

Whether they charge us a fee to provide MOULa or allow us to donate as we choose, for taxes purposes the income is the same.

To not run MOULa as a commercial enterprise would have taken considerable effort on their part. They may have made that effort. But, I think we would have heard of it. Of course I don't stay up on MOUL things all that well now.

It would likely have been much easier to run MOULa as part of Cyan's daily business and MUCH simpler tax-wise. So, your concern about changing to a 'commercial endeavor' probably ignores what the actual case is.

It's my understanding that the donation pot is separate from CYan's income, so it's not taxed.

I think one of the main problems is how to communicate that this this game runs on donations and its are we the community that keep it alive. Cyan is more on the side lines with other projects instead of pointing it out which is sometimes good, we need to spread the word and do work in the community.
This whole game is community based so what YOU DO is what keeps its alive other than donations

We need PBS like adds:

"MOULa is brought to you by Cyan and by 'players like you, thank you'

That's very good - I can suddenly envision a whole series of those ads -
I know you're not serious and they're facetious, but very funny. :)

Acctully jokeing asside, they could replace the 'have you heard of Obduction?' text with a 'plese donate to MOULa' text. I don't think it's too hard to do either.

This sort of things has been mention before.

And, in reference to PBS, previous to that there is at least one older (and rancorous) thread that thoroughly discussed product placements, probably in 2006 or so. I can't find it, which probably means it's now in a hidden forum, but I found two posts that reference it in the form of ideas about "In-Cavern PBS tote bags or coffee mugs," IC pizza parties with real pizza delivered to your home, and IC shops along the Canyon strip where you would buy things, then carry them over to an IC UPS location to be shipped for real to your home or as a present to someone else's home:

Although FedEx might work better than UPS in the Cavern:

There is Uru merchandise out there: Mystwear. I'm not sure how many people know of this site, though (or what - if anything - Cyan gets from this).

(It also looks like it needs an update!)

I checked out Mystware or Mystwear and The Mugs are particularly well done - especially the D'ni Guild, I thought. But, overall, there's not a great deal of diversity. (and the site does look as though an update is needed - they seem to have suspended operation - though that wasn't absolutely clear - but the cost of shipping is mentioned as high and that one should check et al before ordering anything) Mugs and shirts are great, but, for some reason, their 'High Quality Cutting Boards'; 'safe to wash', with an URU scene seemed oddly off center at least to me. I guess I've never thought of 'High Quality Cutting Boards' with an URU scene as 'merchandise' before. But that might just be me.
No fried Urwin and not even any dried Urwin sticks.
