70 in D'ni Numerals

Shorah folks,

So let me preface this by saying I suck at maths, so that may have something to do with this. :lol:

I'm trying to figure out how to write 70 in D'ni numerals, but can't figure out how. Now, I now D'ni is base 25, so numbers above 25 would have to be divided by 25. So, 70 / 25 is 2.8. This is where I get confused.

The example of how to do larger than 25 numbers I found comes from HERE and reads as follows;

So, we take the symbol for 8, which we determine how to make using the earlier mentioned system above. The symbol for 8 goes in the first slot and the remainder of 9 goes in the second...

What we see is [8][9], which in D'ni means we have 8 sets of 25 along with 9 sets of one, which gives us 200 plus 9 for a grand total of 209.

But the math here seems wrong as 209 / 25 is 8.36. Even rounded up that would be 8.4, not 8.9 as the page says.

So yeah, totally confused. Can anyone help me out here?

It appears you're thinking of it as fractions and that's not how it works. Check their math in reverse: 25 x 8 = 200 and 200 + 9 = 209. Does that make more sense?

You're just misunderstanding the terminology. The remainder isn't the same thing as the number following the decimal point. 25*8 + 9 = 209, so 9 is the remainder left over, and that's what's important for converting into base 25, not the 8.36 figure.

How would you differentiate between 52 and 70 in D'ni if you write them in decimal form? Both would be 2.2... right? Maybe it would be better if the two numbers were separated by a comma, like they do in in Europe, or some other punctuation mark (ex. colon or semicolon). They would then be written as 2,2 and 2,20, but then again this would be confusing for European readers. So, maybe a colon or semicolon should be used.

There shouldn't be any confusion as long as it's clear that you're using base 25. The notation with brackets, where 70 = [2][20] and 52 = [2][2], is a common one.

Thanks Talashar! Yes, if you write the two numbers in that manner, then you can differentiate between the them.
