The best(est) :) suggestion came from Ainia. By learning from the "Guild of Writers" forum, how to get to Deep Island, a person will be inevitably be exposed to all of the different Shards, and the work that is ongoing out there in Myst Worlds.

Deep Island is a Great Place to Explore!

I remind you that you can visit the Great Tree using the command: Visit Gt when MagicBot is Magic City.
You can visit the entire pub and the Great Tree and fun to open the doors and place the bridge. :D

I have my theory as to why Cyan disabled the puzzle in the Watcher's pub (aka The Great Tree Pub).
[checks this is the spoilers section]
To complete the puzzle requires the door into the chamber remain closed. Being a public instance, anyone could come along at any moment and open the door, requiring you to start the puzzle from the beginning and risk someone else opening the door.
To solve this would have required a complete redesign of the puzzle, and given the circumstances at the time Myst Online Uru Live started, I think it was easier to just disable that puzzle and create a work-around, which is what we have now.

Like I said, just my theory, probably nowhere near the truth.

Wouldn’t it have been better to just lock the ladder? It would no longer be a puzzle, but at least the Tree would still be accessible.

In The Path Of The Shell, you put together the clues you find around to figure out the puzzle in the Great Tree Pub (as I described above), but that was not how it was meant to work when first envisioned. Cyan wanted more what we have now, where people co-operate to solve the puzzles, but Ubisoft at the time wanted a single player game, and so Cyan made that possible.
The Ahnonnay Age, the Ercana pellet drop and the Great Tree pub were never meant to be single player, but when they made them Single player, the Great Tree had a use that it was forced to disable for Myst Online.

"But why not just have you link via the tree?" it wouldn't be much of a puzzle then. Think about it, the ladder stays locked open, the door is irrelevant, and access to tree is always open. There'd be no puzzle to get to K'veer, and the whole point of the game is puzzles.

I think Cyan took the easiest option available to make the best of a bad situation.
I do realise what I've typed in this post is a bit of stretch, but it makes sense in my head and doesn't write very well.

Assuming there still is a link to K’veer ;)

It doesn’t make the client crash like the Wall do, and there already is an Age without puzzles (Jalak).

However, the retracting walkway apparently only works in the magic version, so that might be one reason.

In fact, with Magic Great tree pub, everything can be seen.
I opened the main door.
The hidden door also works. The scale of stones is activated; allowing you to get on the top floor.
It is also possible to operate the door opening to the big tree and make the mechanism of the gateway function, which allows you to access the great tree.
The starry sky is visible also.
But I did not activate the link to Kveer.
