Here's an idea I had:

Several programs have a "tip a day" on startup, that tells you something useful about the program you might not otherwise have known. A few well-timed tips could go a long way towards helping new players understand the general idea of what to do. For example, upon linking into Relto for the first time:

Day 1: Your KI is the most important d'ni device you'll encounter: it allows you to communicate with friends who are in different worlds, or "Ages," as well as interact with various other pieces of d'ni technology. You can find instructions on how to obtain a KI by "linking" to your neighborhood, through the far-left book on your bookshelf in the hut.

Then, the next time:

Day 2: Did you know that you can become a member of another hood? If you find a member of a neighborhood you want to join, and have deleted your 'hood book by clicking on the tab beneath it, you can ask to link to their relto and use their 'hood linking book (though they may have to "unlock" the book first by flipping up the top tab). Once you have completed these steps, you will have changed your 'hood membership.

After that:

Day 3: Have you gotten stuck inside a wall? Seen something that looks like a serious glitch? Experienced or witnessed one or more players harassing another? Contact an in-game ResEng by clicking...

There should also be an option to toggle the tips on and off, and each tip could have a "previous tip" and a "next tip" option.

Although the spirit of Uru includes figuring out how to do things, I don't think that should extend to non-intuitive game mechanics. (If people can't understand how to interact with anything, or contact people for help, they'll just leave.) So what do you think?

Edit: There's supposed to be a fifth option, but it didn't turn up:

"This is an ok idea, but it needs some tweaking to be viable."

I like this idea a lot but feel that it should be implemented into the game. Possibly, when we get the imager in the cleft, we could have tips be projected on it. I duno, I just really like the idea.

Maybe on a bulletin board in the Relto hut? That would make it nicely in-game.

Oh I can imagine the fun they'd have with that:

Tip of the Day - Lower Your Graphic and/or Audio settings.

I think that this system's viable, I personally think that it should be just a pop-up when you link in to Relto coming online like Owehn said, I mean it's "entrance" places like that that these things usually occur, if I'm making any sense at all.

It should be in game, but I agree. Maybe a KI message? Or a pamphlet that changed every so often.

We already have these, they are called ResEngs and Greeters. And other explorers. There is a certain joy in finding out something through conversing with others that is simply not present from an automated hint.

We sure need some help.

quite a few people have trouble finding the ki, learning how to use it. (And you can hardly meet people at that point )

Some haven't play played myst for a while, sometimes not at all. Getting so lost at the beginning is quite discouraging.

Maybe add a book telling the story of myst before, what to do, etc... In the relto shelve or accessible like the relto book is.

another point, I noticed yesterday the garashen's book is the hood leads you to your hood's gareshen. Quite annoying when you want to help newbie and can't follow them around. It would be better if they acted like the delin/thsogal book does.

I wouldn't mind it...even if the tips were obscure...

but we would also need to have an option to turn it OFF!
some people don't like spoilers....
