I tried the 2-week trial of GameTap on three different computers. One computer, it refused to install (it wasn't recognizing that I was logged in as the administrator). One computer, it installed, but it kept freezing the computer before it even got into the actual program. One computer, it ran fine, but there were giant white blocks all over the screen that are supposed to be sprites, I guess (it's a crappy budget laptop with integrated graphics)

So, since I can't run GameTap, I can't run Uru Live when it's released. So, will there be any way to play it for those who don't have GameTap?

That answer should be "it depends". If you're outside the US and can't get GameTap, yes. If you're in the US, maximum likelihood is only via GameTap.

Try contacting tech support. I hear they're very helpful...

Via GameTap? Yes

Via the GameTap client? Unanswered.

You might want to chat with Gametap's customer support. They were quite helpful to me.

From everything I've read, if you are an area of the world where there is Gametap - that's how you get in, via Gametap.

hmmm If there isnt URULive client for anyone that wants to use it, then I might not be accually playing URULive. Simply because when I want to play I just want to start the game and be on my way.
Not having to start gametap and then start URUlive. On top of that I personally don't like gametaps interface its a major resource hog and kinda buggy to me.

That will get old real quick.

If any of you have any experience with VALVE (Steam), that is the way GameTap should go. The Valve client runs in the background and you just have to click on a standard Desktop icon to play any game.

All I want is a clean program running in background: no advertising since I will be paying monthly for a service. Steam is fill with advertising about other stuff that I don't like to be notify of.

I get adverts for new games coming to Steam, that's all and not very often.

I sense a market struggle between Steam and GameTap. :P

Whoever offers Zork and Uru wins.

Sometimes, its better to have a client you can see rather than one you can't.

Running in the background is fine, but my experience is that programs that run in the background aren't able to be turned off easily, which is NOT FINE

Steam is no problem this way. It sticks itself down in the system tray, and you can exit it easily when you're done playing.

I really do like the way Steam works as compared to the bloated GameTap thingy, but, guess who has Zork and Uru. :o So I guess I'll be running both for some time to come, since I'm certainly not going to miss out on HL2:Ep2! I'm not generally an FPS gamer, but Half-Life has me hooked. Thank goodness Ep2 has been delayed so it won't conflict with the release of Uru Live.

GameTap only has Ads for GameTap stuff and only when you go to GameTap tv or when the client is downloading a game when you play a game the client gets put in the background.

I hope you can play Live outside of GameTap. I signed up for the trial a couple weeks ago when I heard Uru Live would be on there, and I can't say I like it. It's really buggy, and most of the games I download decide to delete themselves at random. For the ones that do stick around, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Then there's GameTap TV, which has lots of cool stuff that I'd like to watch, but it won't work at all. Says "FAILED" every time I try to watch something. I emailed them about that and never got a response. I called them to cancel my account and they offered to extend the free trial for another month and put me through to support, so I did that. Then "Larry" the support guy tells me, after treating me like a complete moron, that the reason GameTap TV isn't working is because I don't have enough hard drive space (I had 2 GB available at the time). I don't think a 4 minute clip (that is supposedly streaming) of Space Ghost needs the 5 gigs that he said it does, but whatever. I freed up about 10, but it still didn't work. In a month I'm going to cancel it for real.

So, uh... yeah, I don't like GameTap much. A separate Uru Live client would be great, although I guess I'd put up with GameTap if I had to. I agree that a Steam-like interface would be much better. Steam has served me well over the last two years.
