I do wonder why Cyan has a problem with replacing offending words with asterisks. Does anyone know?
It's not something I've thought about too much. As long as I've been here there's been a forum rule banning the posting of profanities, and the rule has always included a clause about not misspelling or obfuscating the word as a means of getting around the rule. But this is where the rule and the Word Censor kind of run at cross purposes to each other: The rule is intended to stop posts from containing any profanity or any inference of one; the Word Censor aims to replace the profanity with something more tolerable, so arguably, using "expletive" as a substitute results in a post that might technically breach Policy IV.

This might have nothing to do with anything, but in the cavern, censored words are always replaced by four or five asterisks. I can't recall exactly how many, but it was always the same number no matter how short or long the word was that was being censored. I presume the point was to prevent people from trying to guess what the word was.

I would prefer something like that here. Make it stand out so that the poster can have the opportunity to choose new words!

The same could be done for almost any post in this thread.

A new one came up yesterday, when posting a Radio Free D'ni playlist: That well known group fronted by Steve Harley became expletive Rebel, instead of "male-hen"-ney Rebel..... It does point out the absurdity of censoring all words that contain the banned letter combination.

In this case I'm not sure if a blacklist or a whitelist is the easiest way to go.

Hmm I imagine there are a number of foreign names that trigger the auto-sensor. Hadn't really thought of that till now. Can you even sign up for an account if your name triggers the auto-sensor?

The answer to that is simple because whitelisting isn't an option.

I know Cyan may not have time for this but I will ask just the same. Is there a forum plug-in that allowed for whitelisting?

Here are optional addons that can be added to any phpBB3 forum.

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/

I didn't see anything for a whitelist.

Looking briefly I can't find one either.
