@Ehren, the genericness of a texture (or sound, or whatever) doesn't change anything about the fact that it is copyrighted by Cyan and that you have no license to use it. The amount of work required to create a simple or featureless texture may be smaller, but that doesn't make a difference when it comes to copyright. The "value" of a texture would only be important if you were to purchase the rights to use it.

If those textures were originally released under a free license (as in free of charge, not necessarily the open-source kind of free) that's a different matter, though in that case you should be getting the textures from there in the first place instead of pulling them from Uru.

I don't see how someone could own the concept of dirt, grass, sand, rock, etc. So I can't begin to believe it would be a problem to borrow generic textures.
It's not the concept of those things that someone can own, but the photography and/or drawing of them. Someone worked to capture those images and that's what they own.

Expanding in Tai’lahr’s succinct statement…

Copyright is NOT about owning the concept of dirt and similar naturally occurring materials. Owning concepts is patent law.

We are dealing with copyright. One can photograph a landscape which includes dirt, grass, sky, trees, etc. The dirt, grass, sky, trees, etc. are not copyrighted. It is the picture that is copyrighted.

A texture portraying dirt, grass, sky, trees, or whatever in Cyan’s games is copyrighted. That means that rendition, that texture, the art of whatever is copyrighted not the dirt, grass, sky, trees, or whatever.

You should at least read about copyright law and have an idea of what we are and are not allowed to do with other people’s work.

Just looked at the pics here in this post and at the blog you started. This looks awesome! Can't wait to play your mod.

In browsing the Steam workshop, I came across a mod called "People of the Past", by a modder called Kampferwolf, which adds a Relto book and apparently some Ages to Skyrim. Is that your mod, or is it a different one? If it's a different one, I say go ahead and finish yours anyway--there are bound to be tons of differences, and I will play them both :D

Looking forward to this!
