This is an interesting little twist I happened upon, while googling all things Myst.

Initially in the days of Riven, a set of 'Wingroveisms' put the Cleft and the entrance to the Great Shaft in an unspecified desert-region in the Middle East... hmm... might have been a small opportunity lost, not to keep it there:

The star Achernar--after whom Achenar, son of Atrus, was likely named-- is also known as "Eridani Alpha", and is the chief star in the constellation Eridanus.

The constellation Eridanus is often referred to as a 'river', sometimes even a specific river.. the Po River in northern Italy. The Greeks believed this line of stars was the fractured path that the stolen Chariot of the Sun took, under the unskilled reigns of Apollo's son, Phaeton.

But there is, apparently, a theory that suggests that Eridani gets its name from Eridu, an ancient city in Mesopotamia.. believed to be the earliest city in Mesopotamia, and POSSIBLY the oldest city in the world. This city was sacred to the God 'Enki' who came from a place called Abzu... Abzu means 'deep ocean'... it is a primeval sea in the Underworld-- a space below the surface of the solid world-- where, as the legends say, all life began. Abzu could arguably be described as an underground reservoir of fresh water.

So.... um. WOW. Maybe the world's first city was founded by this D'ni denizen called Enki and his co-horts, who emerged from the Cavern and told stories of an underground lake, which became legend, as they helped to "invent" the idea of cities for the surface-worlders.

Perhaps Atrus knew, or suspected, this ancient city was founded by BOTH his ancestral families, the humans and the D'ni, and he named his son after a star in that very constellation whose name was inspired by the tales of the Cavern.

..or so it may have been.

That's a very lovely theory. Thank you for sharing it, Harvey.

For reference, Eridu seems to have been founded in 5400 BC, or 2256/7 DE. This was during the reign of King Hemelin, and specifically a few years before the Book of Birenni was rediscovered. In that context, Enki may have been a refugee from the plague, since I doubt he'd have been alive before the plague.
