Does anyone know what software Cyan uses for their 3D modeling?

Funny you should ask that. Chogon released a plugin for it 10 minutes before your post. (It's 3ds Max btw)

Shame it's an old version, but this as noted is a microstep and is along the road to full code.

ah well ... I can't afford Max - guess I'll have to wait until we can get plug-ins for other software.

And even if I could, I can't find a legal way to get hold of version 7.

EDIT: Nope, all the links are broken. Not even a trial version. Is that hollow laughter I hear?

I can't find a legal version of it either.

We'll simply have to wait until the plugins are fixed to use other versions, or blender or something. >_>

3DS MAX as a whole is expensive especially when what your paying for is the intergrated 3rd party stuff like Mental Ray (Renderer), syFlex (cloth sym) and crowd Sim which you won't need as an ameture modeller. syFlex standalone costs $US 2,200.

So i would advise waiting for the community to create the blender plugin, blender is a very powerfull tool... just look at their past open projects and their new one Sintel (doing on blender 2.5).

That new version MOULa compatible version of the Blender plugin won't be available before a while, and most likely not until Cyan publishes the sources..

Yes the RETAIL version of 3ds max is very expensive. But you can get the student version of the entire 2010 creation suite (max, maya, mudbox) 1 yr license for $150. That's a reasonable cost if you ask me.

Presumably you have to be a student. That's what I've found with other "student versions" of various programmes.

There's certainly no point in spending anything on a current version of 3ds Max if the plugin only works with a defunct version that you can no longer get. (But Blender drives me INSANE....)    :o

Yeah you do have to be a student to buy it, but its a simple matter to find a student to purchase it for you. I wouldn't worry about the version, as soon as the source is released someone is bound to recompile for 2010. I read over on the forums at GoW that Cyan might do the recompile themselves. One way or another its almost certain we'll have a 2010 version.

If a plug-in were available for Carrara ... would anyone be interested in that program?

OK... that explains a lot... (teasing)

Blender tends to do that. It is a high production tool because of the keyboard shortcuts. But, that also makes it a pain to learn and especially for hobby/infrequent users.

Going from Blender version 2.4x to 2.5 is supposed to see a significant user interface change. Also, how things connect internally is changing. Both of these things should make Blender easier to use and program for our use.

I agree with Lehm that the plug-ins will likely be compiled by Cyan for the latest 3DMax version. I am left wondering how long it will be until we see the source and can adapt it to Blender...

While googling the subject, like many of you I sure, I came across this link:

url deleted

I do not know if this is legit or not, but it was the first legal looking site I found for this software. I was also able to find some trial versions but I don't know what happens after 30 days. I assume registering the product with autodesk would give you the opportunity to pay for and license the product.
