Hi! I wasn't sure who to ask about this so I thought I'd make a post.
My old signature has a little picture in it and I wanted to replace it with a different image about the same size, but when I tried I got a message saying images may only be 100 pixels high. When was that rule enacted? Also that is pretty small these days. Would anyone care enough to bump it up to 120?

Awww, why would you want to change that image? It's a classic. :)

Ah, okay. NEW classic stuff! Nice. I hope you can get them placed in your signature. :)

The rule on sig image sizes has been in place since at least August 2006: The following is extracted from the original forum rules, dated Aug 26, 2006 (and exactly the same text was carried into the current policies):
greydragon wrote:
• You are allowed one image in your signature which is not to exceed a width of 500 pixels and a height of 100 (500x100).
• 500x100 does not mean 500x115. The absolute outer max height is 100, and the absolute outer width is 500 (We check...).

The rule is there to keep the space occupied by each post manageable: Bigger sig images mean you need to scroll more to get to the next bit of real "content". For the same reason, there's a limit on the number of lines of text you're allowed in your signature, the difference being that the forum software can't stop you putting in too many lines of text but it can stop you using an image that's too big. The old forum software couldn't even do that so oversized images often "sneaked" in.

However, I'm just telling you the history and it's Cyan's call on whether they're inclined to change the rule.

Oh trust me, I've been on ridiculously over-signed forums often enough to get why the rule is there. ;)
I guess my old signature, which I added in 2010, must have been one of the ones that "sneaked" in because I honestly don't remember ever seeing that rule. (I guess they didn't check!)

Why not re-size your picture instead? :)

Yeah, if the images weren't obviously oversized then they might not get too much attention - we did used to check, but not rigorously because there was no obvious way to tell when someone changed their signature. And any that are like that just now will still be accepted by the forum software until the user tries to edit their sig because then it'll check the image size.

If you mean to use the image that includes all four books, then, yeah, it might be hard to see what they are. But, I've seen some very large banners in signatures here. Maybe you could line the four images up going across and it might work.

If that doesn't work, then I suppose you could just choose your favorite and have a link to the others. And, if you can't choose a favorite, then post all the images and take a poll! :D

I have a favorite, it's just that if I crop it so you can see the whole book, the linking panel is barely visible, so I'll have to crop it way down to the linking panel, which is a little sad. I'll still link it to the large version. I just need to get over my stress about where to upload my cropped images. So many options, none ideal. When I could get away with a 115 px high image, Deviantart auto-generated thumbnails worked perfectly.
I know, wah wah wah. ;)

Oh thanks TrapperDave, but I can do my own image editing, don't worry about that. I can work with the originals also so the resolution will be better. It's mostly that there isn't anywhere right now where I particularly enjoy uploading my images which also cooperates with hosting them on other sites but isn't a public gallery. I'm sure I'll find something.
