No, that's not it. GameTap wouldn't likely worry about people who are paying them $10 a month out of loyalty for a single game, especially if those people aren't taxing their servers or using up their resources and bandwidth. I dare say that those people are their favorite customers... but...

...the reason they want us to use the GameTap client is so they know that the GameTap client can handle it. This is important.

When Cyan shows GameTap the raw data from people playing Uru, GameTap compares that to it's own access data. If half of us used the standalone client, then Gametap wouldn't be able to be sure that their capabilities reflect the traffic data that Cyan gives them, and they'd be unable to calculate it's own capability to handle what would be potentially thousands more players once the game goes live, when the marketing kicks in. So it's important that they are sure that the GT client can handle as many users as possible.

But, once the game goes live (or soon after), from what I gather, I suspect that Cyan and GT could care less which client method we use.

"But wait," you say, "what about the issue of game rankings in GameTap?" This is grossly overrated. Think: if Uru's game ranking starts to slip, Cyan can simply show GameTap its "real" numbers, which they surely have easy access to... so aside from "Cavern pride" in being #1 on GameTap (and I personally could care a whit about that), I wouldn't worry about Uru losing support from GT.

For the record, we should be sure to do what they ask for now (if you can: I'm on WinXP x64, so I have to use the standalone client, saving me the moral dilemma :wink:), but I'd also raise the question again after the game goes "live."
