I think it is a Moral Imperative to get some of these recorded.

Well, consider that you're dealing with 1) the subset of Myst fans who play Uru Live; 2) the subset of those who read this forum; 3) the subset of those who know what filk is (and are willing to click on the link despite that :D ). I suspect there are Zappa/Myst fans who don't know what filk is, and thus didn't know that there might be Zappa-specific content in this thread...

Personally, I know of Zappa, but I haven't heard much of his music, and I'm unfamiliar with the tune you used.

Uru Launching Day (to the tune of "Weasel Stomping Day" by Weird Al Yankovic

Faces filled with joy and cheer
Time for cavern life to appear
Shorah all it's Uru Launching Day

Put Kadish's helmet on
Pray they get the algae turned on
Don't you know it's Uru Launching Day (Uru Launching Day)

All explorers in the Cave
Love the journeys that Yeesha gave
We don't know what they're about
But they make the Bahro give a shout

So come along with DRC
I hope Lexi will talk to me
So I can tell her to go away
Shorah b'Shem it's Uru Launching Day!

(Musical interlude, punctuated by sounds of bahro screams)

People in the Library
Hoping Tsogal is what they see
Parties in every Bevin
As we pray Tsogal's not like Delin

So let exploring fun begin
Open ages and let us in
Let the ferries meet us at the quay
Shorah b'Shem it's Uru Launching
What's up with them on Uru Launching
Look out for Gehn it's Uru Launching Day

Shorah b'Shem it's Uru Launching Day
Uru Launching Day
HEY!

(Music by Weird Al Yankovic. Lyrics by DocOlanA.)

a risque interlude... :)

Me bandy eyed Queen from D’ni

O for the bandy eyed girls of yore,
the silver kneed queens of D'ni;
their dimples all smiling,
their kisses all slobbery:
as our lips pucker smackingly,
and we sip our buckets of Jack, O me-o;
our Captain comes back in a sack,
and we all salute and laugh, O me-o,
while our heads goes clack
and the buckets goes crack,
and our ladies in waiting
go tit-for-tat and whack
us with golden cleavers and tacks.

--- O D'ni lands, I dream of me Queen,
--- the wandering lass from Reeleshen!

O sing me boys of D’ni land,
home of me light, home of me fright,
where screaming bahroes cry in the night,
while me dreams of fine lassies and kites
who don't mind me whiskers and mites,
and pucker sweet lips for me kisses
as I belch and fetch me fog blesses,
and cause such a ruckus as me dances
that all of me boys laugh hardy and long
and toss me with relish onto me old bones,
where I land on me tush, O me-o,
and bounce like a koosh, O me-o,
until me poor head is alight
with the stars of the night
and then I dream of me dear Lady in White:

--- O D'ni lands, I dream of me Queen,
--- the wandering lass from Reeleshen!

from the farcical desk of earthwiz… :P

I have a contibution of a more serious tone. Sometimes I see people get very testy with each other over differences in opinion. I've seen people feeling shunned and others being narrow-minded or unforgiving. I am reminded of a very common poem that I have taken the liberty of adapting to our community (hopefully Max Ehrmann isn't rolling in his grave).

D'niderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all explorers.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the DRC and Yeesha;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your reward items as well as your speculations.

Keep interested in your own journey, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your affiliations;
for the Cavern has its share of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass in Tsogahl.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with IC vs. OC.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the Great Tree of Possibilities and the Ages;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the ages are unfolding as they should.

Therefore be at peace with Yahvo,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all the community's past broken dreams,
there are still beautiful worlds.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

D'NI CALLING
(to the tune of "London Calling" by "The Clash")

D'ni calling to the faraway hoods
Now war is declared - with forum falsehoods
D'ni calling to the underworld
Come out of the ages, ya boys and girls
D'ni calling, now don't look to us
Phoney controversies have bitten the dust
D'ni calling, see we ain't got no swing
'Cept for the rings on that trench pit thing

Chorus:
Disaster is coming, the ground's quaking in
Gahreesen's stop turning, the twinkies' running thin
A server vault error, but I have no fear
Cause D'ni is burning and I ... I live in my Relto.

Now get this...
D'ni calling, yes, I was there, too
An' what the ADM said? Well, some of it was true!
D'ni calling, do we need all this bile?
And after all this, won't you give me a smile?
D'ni calling

I never felt so much alike, like-a, like-a...

Anarchy in AG!

Sorry ... I'll behave now

Well, I put this in the Creativity forum last week*...the mods really need to do something about the crickets in there...

D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

Hey Mr Atrus won't you read my Book
It took me years to Write, won't you take a look
It's based on a couple by a guy named Gehn**
And I need your help, 'cause I wanna be a
D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

It's a crystal mountain in a sea of sand
'Neath a purple sky, it's such a magic land
There are crimson swans that sing a haunting tune
It's a stable Age, and I wanna be a
D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

There's a thousand Ages, give or take a few
I can write some more in a week or two
I can make them larger if you think I should
I can change them round, and I wanna be a
D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

If you really like it you can have a link
I just need to know, tell me what you think
Do I have it in me to be in the Guild
I could learn from you, but I wanna be a
D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

D'ni Age Writer, D'ni Age Writer...

*Which since the mods have moved the thread now means it's in here twice. It wasn't my fault guv, I'm innocent...
**Yes, I know, but nothing else scanned...

Wow, someone actually linked my composition of "Uru Launching Day." I'm touched. Thanks.

I have a brand new filk parody, by the way! Here it is:

Quote:
"Atrus and his Sons" (to the tune of "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin)

My sons arrived just the other day
They came to the age in the usual way
But there were books to write, no time for play
They learned to walk while I was away
And they were linkin' 'fore I knew it, and as they grew
They said, "We're gonna be like you, dad
You know we're gonna be like you"

And Katran's in the ages that were made by Gehn
Start with Inception and end with Riven
"When you teach us D'ni Dad?" "I don't know when
But we'll write some ages then, sons
You know we'll have a good time then"

In Channelwood just the other day
They said "Thanks for the link Dad, please let us stay"
I had Everdunes, and Stoneship's quay
I had a lot to do, I said "That's okay"
And they played with natives while the waters dimmed
And said "We're gonna be like him, yeah
You know we're gonna be like him"

And Katran's in the ages that were made by Gehn
Start with Inception and end with Riven
"When you teach us D'ni Dad?" "I don't know when
But we'll write some ages then, sons
You know we'll have a good time then"

Well they came home from N'arayan the other day
They'd passed all my tests I just had to say
"Sons, I'm proud of you, let me teach you to write?"
They said "There's pirate flags black as night
What we'd really like dad is the Mechanical age
See you later, trust us and our ways"

And Katran's in the ages that were made by Gehn
Start with Inception and end with Riven
"Let me teach you D'ni sons," "We don't care when
Cause we'll have your ages then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then"

I've long since been working on Gehn's fifth age
My sons came back, all in a rage
They took my books and library and burned them all
I shed a tear as I watched Myst fall
But they said "Cathrine's on Riven, through the book in K'veer
And she said she's waiting for you, Dad
She said she'll be waiting for you"

And as they tore out my page, I realized then
They'd grown up just like Gehn
My boys were just like Gehn

And Katran's in the ages that were made by Gehn
Start with Inception and end with Riven
"Who cares for your D'ni Dad, we realized when
We knew we'd have your ages then, Dad
And yes we had a good time then"

If I made a fan recording with my limited equipment of my two filk songs (this one, and "Uru Launching Day," plus some of the others I've written ("Ballad of the Bat", "Ballad of Darth Vader", "Harry and Cho", "The Sorcerer's Stone", etc.) would anyone actually be interested? I've thought about making a go at filking for a while, but I'm a little rusty on parody and fair use law. What are the rules on that?[/quote]

I'm sure people would be interested. I'm not too well up on parody and fair use and so on myself, especially in America, but there is a thriving market for filk recordings so it must be possible.
