Chatlog from the speech Dr Watson held in Communityroom Blabbity Bevin.
Dr Watson in Communityroom Blabbity Bevin 9-12

(09/12 23:36:20) Chat.log started...

(09/12 23:37:31) Dr. Watson: I've prepared a speech. I will not be taking questions, unless I have time after the speech.
(09/12 23:38:06) Reteltee: Shh, please guys, let's be a good audience and listen with our eyes, not our hands
(09/12 23:38:36) Dhelayan: Please take your seat, so that mr. watson can start. thanks
(09/12 23:39:03) Dr. Watson: OK. I think we've watied long enough.
(09/12 23:39:13) Wardred: Quite Please...
(09/12 23:39:25) Dhelayan: Yes
(09/12 23:39:36) Dr. Watson: Yes, please keep chatting to a minimum. Thank you.
(09/12 23:40:07) Dr. Watson: Let's begin.
(09/12 23:40:18) Dr. Watson: Good afternoon.
(09/12 23:40:34) Dr. Watson: I've been asked for my advice on many issues wince my recent return.
(09/12 23:40:59) Dr. Watson: I reallly haven't had time to get caught up on everything that 's been happening here,
(09/12 23:41:20) Dr. Watson: but I sat down this morning and attempted to come up with some kind of statement
(09/12 23:41:37) Dr. Watson: on the issues that have been brought to my attention.
(09/12 23:41:47) Dr. Watson: First, the Guilds.
(09/12 23:42:25) Dr. Watson: I've been told that here are folks who are very upset that the DRC are attempting to follow the D'ni lead in taking
(09/12 23:42:54) Dr. Watson: steps to re-form the Guilds. They say that the Guilds are "bad", that
(09/12 23:43:07) Dr. Watson: they inevitably lead to Pride.
(09/12 23:43:31) Dr. Watson: The Guilds are not inherenlty bad in and of themselves.
(09/12 23:44:06) Dr. Watson: Those who blame "the Guilds" for the Fall of D'ni have not understood Yeesha's words
(09/12 23:44:14) Dr. Watson: and have missed her point completely.
(09/12 23:44:51) Dr. Watson: The Guilds provided stability and structure for the D'ni culture, which allowed their civilization to thrive for tens of thousands of years.
(09/12 23:45:33) Dr. Watson: The problem with the Guilds in D'ni history is the same thing that's the problem here in the Cavern today: people.
(09/12 23:45:43) Dr. Watson: More sepcifically: our Pride.
(09/12 23:46:15) Dr. Watson: The very lesson that Yeesha has repeatedly attempted to teach us.
(09/12 23:46:43) Dr. Watson: We already have our own prolbems of Pride. We haven't needed the Guilds for that.
(09/12 23:47:28) Dr. Watson: If things are going to be different this time around, it's up to all of us, including you Explorers, to choose to be more responsible than the D'ni were at the time of the Fall.
(09/12 23:47:58) Reteltee: me thinks the Dr. has an excellent point
(09/12 23:48:13) Dr. Watson: Just as the Bahro are finding our right now with their newly-found freedoms - it all comes down to the choices we make.
(09/12 23:48:40) Dr. Watson: Frankly, from what I've been hearing, ther are many Explorers who are not ready for this responibility.
(09/12 23:49:14) Dr. Watson: And if their influences are allowed to taint the new Guilds, all our efforts are sure to fail again.
(09/12 23:50:01) Dr. Watson: What's the alternative? Learn to work together. Stop complaing when things are not exactly as you'd like them to be.
(09/12 23:50:20) Dr. Watson: Stop bickering amon yourselves.
(09/12 23:50:29) Dr. Watson: Stop choosing to divide yourselves.
(09/12 23:50:44) Dr. Watson: There is much more at stake here than our egos.
(09/12 23:51:16) Dr. Watson: You do have the ability to choose to work together.
(09/12 23:51:22) Dr. Watson: Make that choice.
(09/12 23:51:48) Dr. Watson: AS for the Cavern, I was asked yesterday if we should all leave the Cavern, so let me clarify my position.
(09/12 23:52:34) Dr. Watson: /Shout When the Restoration first began, what seems like decades ago, I gave another speech.
(09/12 23:52:50) Dr. Watson: in that sppech, I explained that I felt "Called" here.
(09/12 23:53:18) Dr. Watson: /Shout I said that this Cavern was meant to be inhabited, and that it was our intent to make it habitable once again.
(09/12 23:54:19) Dr. Watson: (oops, repeating) I said that this Cavern was meant to be inhabited, and that it was our intent to make it habitable once again.
(09/12 23:54:54) Dr. Watson: I was convinced of it. I was sure that the warnings of Atrus did no apply to those of us from the Surface.
(09/12 23:55:05) Dr. Watson: I no longer believe that is the case.
(09/12 23:55:39) Dr. Watson: But do not misunderstand me. I am still drawn here, but now I'm drawn to learn the lessons that this Cavern has to teach me.
(09/12 23:55:57) Dr. Watson: But I will apply those lessons elsewhere.
(09/12 23:56:37) Dr. Watson: No longer is it my goal to restor this place with the hope of reinhabiting it. That is where the DRC and I differ in our opinions.
(09/12 23:57:03) Dr. Watson: Of course, I'm perfectly willing to admit that it may turn out that I am wrong; that they are right.
(09/12 23:57:17) Dr. Watson: Should we leave, then?
(09/12 23:57:53) Dr. Watson: No. I think that would be just as grave an error. As I said, this Cavern still has much to teach us.
(09/12 23:58:05) Dr. Watson: But what of the Bahro?
(09/12 23:58:28) Dr. Watson: the conflict that is going on all around us here in the Cavern and in many of the Ages?
(09/12 23:58:58) Dr. Watson: I've been asked why the "bad" Bahro are attacking us. Is it because they think we're the D'ni?
(09/12 23:59:34) Dr. Watson: no, I don't think that's the case. In fact, after hearing of the destruction in Negilahn from Douglas Sharper,
(09/13 00:00:12) Dr. Watson: I think it's clear that the BAhro who have chosen to become bent on destruction are completely indiscriminate about what they destroy.
(09/13 00:00:38) Dr. Watson: What did the animals around the pods ever do to the Bahro? They clearly weren't killed for food.
(09/13 00:01:12) Dr. Watson: It seems to be destruction simply for the sake of destruction. Cruelty for the sake of cruelty.
(09/13 00:01:32) Dr. Watson: they seem to do it just because they can.
(09/13 00:02:18) Dr. Watson: And the Bahro who killed Wheely, from the description of events that Michael has given me, specifically kept her alive wheil she was trapped.
(09/13 00:02:49) Dr. Watson: My only conclusion from that behavior is that it was studying her or toying with her.
(09/13 00:03:28) Dr. Watson: shout which immediately brings to mind the many Bahro who received a very similar treatment from a D'n man who lived in Noloben named Esher.
(09/13 00:03:59) Dr. Watson: which immediately brings to mind the many Bahro so received a very similar tratment from a D'ni man who lived in Noloben named Esher.
(09/13 00:04:46) Dr. Watson: I'm told the Bahro even specifically attempted to say the word "noloben" before it attacked her.
(09/13 00:05:19) Dr. Watson: But what can we do about the "bad" bahro? No much. for now, we are protected.
(09/13 00:06:01) Dr. Watson: the "good" bahro protecting us have created a grand deception for our peace of mind - an illusion that all is well here in the Cavern and the Ages.
(09/13 00:06:41) Dr. Watson: We now know that his is not the case, but how much longer will their prot4ection last?
(09/13 00:07:02) Dr. Watson: A week? A month? a year? a decade? a century?
(09/13 00:07:13) Dr. Watson: I have no idea.
(09/13 00:07:33) Dr. Watson: Funny thing about prophecies... they don't always come with an expiration date.
(09/13 00:07:52) Dr. Watson: But we have been told that "Destruction is coming."
(09/13 00:08:17) Dr. Watson: I believe specifically that that destruction is coming to the Cavern, but I could be wrong about that, too.
(09/13 00:08:55) Dr. Watson: it is entirely possible that the "destruction" is a great deal larger than that.
(09/13 00:09:22) Dr. Watson: Either way, we need to use the time we are being given to "Find a way. Make a home."
(09/13 00:09:36) Dr. Watson: How can we do that?
(09/13 00:09:45) Wardred: Please allow the Doctor to continue with out destractions.
(09/13 00:10:00) Dr. Watson: That's where the Guilds come in. We have got to work together.
(09/13 00:10:26) Dr. Watson: It will not happen overnight. It will likely take many years, in fact.
(09/13 00:10:47) Dr. Watson: But I believe the Guilds are the key.
(09/13 00:11:48) Dr. Watson: Yeesha has already been to hundreds of Ages, looking for something, anything, that might help to end the Bahro conflict, or, at the very least, help to protect us from it in case there comes a time when the "good" Bahro are no longer able to.
(09/13 00:12:30) Dr. Watson: As time passes, it grows increasingly unlikely that anything is going to be found in an Age the D'ni have or had access to.
(09/13 00:12:53) Dr. Watson: And so, we are going to need new Ages at some point.
(09/13 00:13:18) Dr. Watson: There are those among the Explorers who may eventually be able to assist in that regard.

(09/13 00:13:43) Dr. Watson: That is the direction I believe we must take.
(09/13 00:14:04) Dhelayan: Please be quite, thanks.
(09/13 00:14:31) Dr. Watson: The Guilds (and even the Explorers who are not interested in joining a Guild) will have to work together: writing, maintaining, mapping, and exploring those new Ages.
(09/13 00:15:13) Dr. Watson: It is a grand undertaking. And much of it depends on you Explorers, and how well you choose to work together.
(09/13 00:15:37) Dr. Watson: Will we be up to the challenge?
(09/13 00:16:12) Dr. Watson: That definitely remains to be seen. I hope we are.
(09/13 00:16:21) Dr. Watson: Thank you for your kind attention.

So to sum up (and I may be missing bits):
It's a *deception* to think it's safe in the Cavern. *Destruction is coming* from the naughty Bahros. We have to *find a way* to set aside our pride and work, preferably *together*. And Watson recommends we *make a home* in the Guilds.
Some would say these are the answers we've been speculating about all season. So well done Cyan, simple and effective storytelling.

Others might say that there's nothing new here. That over the past year anyone could have pieced this together from Yeesha's intro speech, to the Bahro civil war, to the DRC announcing Guilds, to just plain being nice to each other. But Myst stories never were meant to be overly complicated.

I wanna play! So
if the Guilds are the answer, what can we do other than talk in them. I see maps already being made (cartographers), chatlogs already being made (messengers), newbies already being helped (greeters), Ages already being inspected (maintainers). What about writers? Seems they've got to wait longer than everyone else to do anything other than dream.
Hooo Boy - talk about putting the cat among the pigeons...... /as she stands back and waits for the feathers to start flying.

Watson is right though - it all boils down to choice. For us and the Bahro. Question is - what choice will we make? Personally I hope that it is not a ego-centered one. In that way lies distruction.

I am glad that he included those of us who choose not to join the guilds when he said we must all work together.

OOC - since it is only Wednesday wonder what Cyan has in store for tomorrow and maybe Friday? This is just supposed to be the lead-in to the season final. Interesting times - Interesting times.

Frankly, from what I've been hearing, there are many Explorers who are not ready for this responsibility. And if their influences are allowed to taint the new Guilds, all our efforts are sure to fail again. What's the alternative? Learn to work together. Stop complaining when things are not exactly as you'd like them to be. Stop bickering among yourselves. Stop choosing to divide yourselves. There is much more at stake here than our egos. You do have the ability to choose to work together. Make that choice.

This was the most impressive to me. I think there's a great deal of OOC in this.

It's time for us to grow up.

In my opinion, of course..

Of course.

His speech was startling.

Moving forward as best we can it's been part guess work, and part consulting with others. But with this speech I get the sense that a larger part of our ideas then we dared dream were close to if not right on the mark.

I agree with Whilyam there was a lot of what is happening in the forums in this speech. If we want to play our part in this we need to work together, and yes even grow up a bit.

I'm now thrilled; Dr. Watson makes some strong implications. Not least of which:
Quote:
Dr. Watson: And so, we are going to need new Ages at some point.
. . . There are those among the Explorers who may eventually be able to assist in that regard.

This is pretty awesome. Combined with the statements about the cavern, I think we can expect to see a change in the game, possibly an overhaul of the cavern itself. More importantly, I think there is some serious hope for an Age Creation Kit, or at least some sort of involvement in the system. And there's a pretty hard implication we'll be seeing non-D'ni ages, which'll be neato keen.

Cool things ahead, indeed! Episode 2 shall rock!

I agree with MustardJeep and Whilyam. A strong, powerful speech, and startling in spots, yes.

But inspiring, as well. I ask you folks -- are you ready to Dream Big? Because it sounds like we've just been handed that license. What can we do? Well, I suspect almost anything if we put our minds to it and act as one. :D

One of the things I really want to talk about, though, is the following:

(09/12 23:56:37) Dr. Watson: No longer is it my goal to restor this place with the hope of reinhabiting it. That is where the DRC and I differ in our opinions.

...

I agree with the good Doctor that the guilds are very important. But I respectfully disagree that it is folly to restore the Cavern. The Cavern is where the Explorers reside while they are together. It is where we gather, where we play, where we collaborate. The Cavern is our "house". I would encourage us all to help make it our home.

The soul needs nourishment and safety as well as the body. It is important mentally and spiritually to have a home. Yet by finding our homes solely in the Guilds, we still split ourselves away from each other. By ignoring the Cavern, we leave the place we truly share unkempt and broken-down.

I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to contribute to the creation and exploration of new Ages in the hopes of ending the Bahro conflict. In this aspect, I think the Doctor is right. By using the Guilds as a tool to facilitate this course of action, we may be able to save ourselves, the Bahro, and perhaps even this world, if the consequences are as dire as he predicts.

I personally think it is important, however, that we contribute to the restoration of D'ni as well, both as a physical action and a sign of our choice to be one. We were drawn here by Yeesha, by D'ni itself. That has not changed, it is something we all share. I feel that we should choose to be at home together, and make it so -- united in the Cavern as a whole, while working together in the Guilds to craft our action.

*gets down off her soapbox* These are just my thoughts, of course, and it's OK if you folks disagree with me. I really wanted to broach this as something to talk about and discuss in more detail.

Amen to that
That seams pretty good advise :)

Isn't your thesis that Cyan was attempting to divide the players? And if so, isn't his suggestion that we stop dividing ourselves a little off?

Manufactured Divisions is about divisive story without substance; division based on say-so for its own sake. It's about being made to feel or react a certain way without tangible cause. Why choose sides? Because we are told we must. Why must we? For the sake of conflict, not story. It is possible to have conflict which is not manufactured by giving it meaning and purpose through a solid, detailed story. But I went further and asked for story to unite the community in Common Cause or against external threats instead of internal ones. Examples of such things are Lighting the Cavern and the Bahro civil war.

Manufactured Divisions was displayed most prominently, well after my warnings against such things, when Nick White pushed people to resurrect the abandoned ADM and blatantly advocated anger and division among the community for the sole purpose of conflict. Its failure was obvious and the story was mercifully ended in a single sentence said by an NPC to the ADM organizer.

I am happy with the direction Dr. Watson is asking us to take. Where Cyan actually takes the story, as we have been told, might be quite different because IC Dr. Watson, obviously, does not represent OOC Cyan. If the ADM was necessary to convince Cyan it's not a good idea to incite civil war among your subscriber base, then it was worth it. If the direction of the story runs contrary to my original thesis, that's a good thing. Maybe they listened and learned. I'm looking forward to more.

But you forget about the fact that the Bahro are decieving us with the Illusion that the cavern is fine, the BAhro make us see what they want us to see!

one thing that don't make sence Watson said this the guilds is going to take years to do. ummm this is a game rember and its going to get mighty BOARING in the mean time. Thats right we don't have much TIME!

So actualy we need to get the guilds going and fast if we are to write some ages to move too. this is like gardenay (spelling) they knew destruction was comming so they prepared by writing ages and going to them.
Same thing here with the cavern.

Deception who to trust???

09/13 00:06:01) Dr. Watson: the "good" bahro protecting us have created a grand deception for our peace of mind - an illusion that all is well here in the Cavern and the Ages.

I thought that this meant that the good Bahro were deceiving the bad into believing that all was well here and that their war need not come here, and in that way were protecting us from them.
