If I was the Grand High Poohbahette of the Guild of Messengers, this is what I'd be doing:

Stage 1:
Make existing In-Cavern information flow as effective as possible
~Find out what the Relayers need. Get feedback from the community about the Relayers. Help fine tune the Relay process.

~ Build an effective live Heraldic network.

~Build a standardized KImail system for sending vital information

~Start getting input from the community about what they want for in-game information flow.

Stage 2:
Increase scope and structure
~ Build an AP-style news network. Develop a point source for cavern news, with free access to that news for all websites, groups and organizations. All groups can send info there, all groups can draw info from.

~ Appropriate, update and fine tune the Myst Embassy Nexus as the standard one-stop-shopping link source.

~ Network with existing groups to maintain individuality while having cooperative efforts, and avoiding duplicating work.

Stage 3:
Plan for the future
~ Begin building list of reccomendations for game modifications that would enhance and further cavern information flow; based on group experiences and explorer needs.

~ Gather teaching materials for media services like running pod/shoutcasts, recording video, etc.

~~~~~~~
I think an 'umbrella' Guild is the wrong way to go. There's no reason that groups can't stay autonomous, and still be connected as part of a network.
Take the Relayers, for example. They were nominally part of D'net, yet I never had any hand in their running. Lynnutte did more than well all on her own.
CCN or Uru Radio wouldn't have to change a thing about what they do, but they would know where to go for the most up to date, accurate information, the Guild of Messengers AP board. And when they had news come first to them, they would have a place to put it, knowing it could get to everyone.
Groups like the D'net, who were only half-Messengery (the Town Halls and such themselves, I think, wouldn't fall under the scope of the GoM, although getting the word out about them certainly would)
As long as there's people willing to take charge and do the work that needs to get done, that's really good enough. Yeah, it helps if everyone agrees on a person or two who are In Charge, so if decisions need made quickly or a buck needs stopped, people know who has that responsibility. But you don't need a committee to come up with that, you do it by working together, and finding out who's skills lie where. I'm a good organizer... I'm an awful news-poster. Someone else might be fantastic at getting stuff posted to a dozen forums in a timely manner, but might not be so good at organizing. So don't put them in charge of organizing. Each person does what they are good at, and becomes a part of the whole.
Hmm, maybe it's sort of a Messengery communism ;)
Eleri thats what I wanted*, I saw the best way to do that was of a council of interested messaging groups. Then we got bogged down
*With the D'net interface I don't really like Myst Embassy's
Good ideas, Eleri. To them I'd add teaching people how to use the various tools and techniques. How to use KI-mail effectively, how to be a good Town Crier/Herald, all the way to using FRAPS and other programs needed for news.
No further comments…that's just awesome, Eleri :D
Afilliated with a Guild like the described above I could feel comfortable with…
When I've read a few threads about those issues, yesterday and before,
I just felt and thought…ohmy…how will this ever… Now you've given the
answers and phrased my thoughts…
Problem was and is, that almost everything needed is already there…
We already have wonderful, I would say highly developed and autonomous
news provider groups. A GoM cannot be built and structured like other Guilds…
Now, I'm again very confident and full of hope… I'll retain my yellow shirt and
just wait and see how things develop and where else I'll fit in besides being with TGT…
Exactly. If we envision the Guild of Messengers first as a network, rather than an absorbing Amoeba of Messengeriness, then many of the issues presented start to melt away.
So, continuing in my imaginary role as GHP, with an eye towards Stage One:
I hereby declare Lynnutte the Mistress of Relayers (DUH!), charged with maintaining the Relayer system, and checking in regularly about How It Is Going...
Hmm... I dub Janine Head Herald, charged with coming up with a functioning live announcement system, gathering the people to be Heralds, and starting the service in cavern.
And I dub...hmm... *draws name from hat of many useful people* Sambase as the KiMail King. Goest thou and figure out how best to send mass KIMails in cavern.
See how easy that was? ;)
Now how about the rest of us keep getting together and talking about our ideas, and our wishes for the GoMe... no worries about who's representing who, or needing votes, or anything, just Explorers getting together, on equal footing, to build something truly nifty.
(Also, totally agree with Sambase on D'net interface (wordpress) vs ME's (sloppy code by me.). The Nexus is a fantastic concept, but it needs serious updating, and take WORK to maintain. )
This is an interesting thread, Eleri. Can't see a royal poobah dubbing anyone, but I can see the Guild Masters/Mistresses getting together and recommending members they think are ready for more responsibility (those members who have asked for more responsibility).
I've had an idea for a long time, and today seemed like a good day to put it out there. It combines "ideas" about the GoMes with the "meet a need, fill a need" thread. It's a People Resources List and I thought it fit best in the Messengers Resources thread. Don't know any poobah-ness will come out of it, (lol) but at least we'll know what people do and what they want to contribute.
The Nexus needs a lot of work, yeah. I just haven't had time to tune it. If someone wants to take that project on, feel free! :)
All kidding about Poohbahness aside, getting a good Herald system in place and trial running it next episode is a Very Good Idea.
I heard through the grapevine that the party was cancelled due to the fact that only person showed up. Don't cry Lynnutte, Uru is one huge party ;)
Nope... part of the reason for the relayers is so people doing have to flood whatever space the DRC shows up in.
I think Thend was doing something similar to this by sharing a "daily update" KI mail during the last episode. I'm not sure who was sponsoring it or who all was involved but it was being rapidly shared among explorers hanging out in the city at one point.
It was a great idea and very similar to a town crier- only quieter...
