Hey mods... not sure if I'm putting this in the right place, so please feel free to move it if you think it belongs elsewhere.

Hey - as many of you may know - Truespace is my very favorite program for 3D art. I plan on getting the 3DS Max plugins re-translated for it.

The maker of Truespace (Roman Ormandy) has decided to make his latest version available for free to anyone who wants it.

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/s ... #post71696

gives his personal message to the 3D community.

I paid around $300 for version 7, but version 7.6 is FREE!!!

Download and try it out and let me know what you think.

The fact that it has a integrated multiuser whiteboard is impressive.

Wow! Truespace came with the DirectX programming book I bought years back. I used Caligari on the Amiga some, too. I guess I'll have to look at it again now. :)

I was wondering if they were going to do that... ;)

EDIT: Here's the SDK page. (It appears to have Python support, too.)

Thank you for this news, greypiffle! I was just contemplating whether to upgrade from TrueSpace 5, and this settles it!

I would certainly prefer to work with TrueSpace over Blender, and I think that those new to age creation would have a much easier time learning the interface for TrueSpace (TrueSpace is known for it's great interface) as opposed to Blender (known for it's poor interface). Now that it's free, I think it has a much better chance for getting wider support in the community, which is great news!

Looks like greypiffle has gone on a crusade since Alahmnat told him that no one but but him uses Truespace (I might be loosely paraphrasing). LOL. I hope it works, greypiffle! Nothnig like being inspired to take on a challenge and run with it. If it works better than Blender (that's my new slogan, btw: "Better Than Blender!") and doesn't have the learning curve of a "sheer cliff wall" (another classic Alahmnatism) like Blender, so much the better for having a choice.

lol - since he told me that, I've met 3 other people who use it. One, I think, currently models in TS - ports to blender and converts for ACLUGS. But now we won't have to do that. :D

Give it a try. It is SOOO much more user friendly.

So what happens when you put a frog into Truespace and turn it on?

Sounds a lot more user friendly. Frogs like it too. ;)

Cute, Greypiffle Frogg!

LOL.

I know nothing about it, but I think a serious look into Truespace is in order if it is intuitive and approaches the rumored power of its ugly cousin.

Just take a look at their monthly galleries. They had a forum crash, so no update this month, but even so, you can look at about a year's worth of excellent pictures.

http://www.caligari.com/Gallery/ImagesG ... te=GImages

Imagine what CAN be done!

and I do find it intuitive. Select a cube - click on the screen and a perfect cube it there - grab a handle and stretch and squash it to your heart's content. click and drag and you can get it any dimension you like. and right there on the screen is a display of the size in x-y-z which you can change there and it changes the cube. same for all the primitives. the Tutorials are now free too, so download some and watch them.

Omigawd, that sounds a lot like what we do in Second Life! This gives me hope that even I can build an age.... er, well... maybe I'll recommend the program to some of our more creative and artistic explorers there.

Seriously, though, things created in this program can be exported and used in other programs that the age builders are using? (It might be a dumb question, but I'm a real technofeeb.)

Yes - Blender can import/export both .cob and .obj, and Truespace can as well. do a search of my posts here on the forum, I forgot where I put it, but I have some slideshows of a couple of the ages I have started creating.

And I started out barely competent. I'm sure that you can do as well if not better! After all, the program is free, so it wouldn't hurt to download and try it out.

EDIT: I found it again.

Click this line and go to the bottom of the page in the thread. It's the 3rd from the last post.

Ugh... the examples in that gallery are beautiful... so much better than I'll ever be able to accomplish... :x

Anyone know if there'll be tutorials for Age creation in Truespace? I downloaded the Blender tutorial but I'm not good with Blender at all, so I've been looking for a more user-friendly program... :D

Just do what I do... Build a world for yourself, and wait for the plugin so you can finish up.
As far as being better than you will ever do...
I used to feel that way too, but took it a step at a time, and now I'm doing very well.

If you go to the forums there, there is a "Work In Progress" forum that will help enormously.
And all the tutorials are free now.
