Q: How will Cyan handle companies like Valve, Microsoft, or even GameTap if they say, "Hey, that doesn't look so bad after all if we don't have to pay for development except our own small customizations."

The same way that any other Open Source project does (Apache/Mono/Linux/KDE/Gnome/SDL). Depending on the license:
 • "Sure, just make sure you make the source of what you've done available free-of-charge to your customers under this license, that you don't charge for other people's work, and you credit the people who made it." (GPL-style license)
 • "Sure, do with it what you like, no strings. Even sell it, if you want. Just make sure we're credited for it." (BSD-style license)
There are other examples/differences, and I may be wrong with my summaries, but I think that's pretty much the gist of them.

Q: Followup: Would Cyan anticipate that could be good for significant contracts for content? Would Cyan be prepared to accept them? Or would Cyan remain out of the content business until it can afford its own official shard?

I should think Cyan's content could be licensed under different rules, if necessary. I am certain they would want to protect their copyright on it, at the very least.

[Edit]Looking through the summaries on Wikipedia, it looks like Cyan can't use the GPL as-is (As they are built with PhysX, whose license prohibits being forced into an "Open-Source License" as the GPL would do). However, Uru could be built under the Lesser GPL, which permits linking of code under other licenses (Open or Proprietary).[/Edit]

My questions may appear simple, but they are targeted to reveal larger issues.

My second question is not about content and open source. It is already known that Cyan content is a separate issue from from the open source software.

I've always figured that the ovens were staged.

1) Will writers still be obliged to honor RAWA's rules of writing or have an FCAL for their work?

2) Should the inter-guild FCAL panel be activated for those who want to get a license for their work?

I'm curious,

Will Myst V content(ages) be included when released/at some point?

I was wondering what open source would mean for age creation. Would fans now be allowed to use Cyan models, texures and music in thier ages? Would fans be allowed to use material from RealMyst and Myst V?

I would like to see some creative fans incorporate elements of Myst island from RealMyst and Myst V into Uru as well as the other ages of Myst and Myst V. Most of the Myst V puzzles would need to be extensively redesigned, but I'm sure there are fans willing to try.

Lastly, if people are allowed to do this, how do we avoid having way too many versions of these ages?

Will there be cake? :D

Yes, I know, I was just wondering if they would ever add the ages at some point. They should have the rights back as far as I know (if not yet, by the end of the year if I remember correctly?), so the possibility for them to add it is there, at least, I think.

Isn't that a given? :D
Perhaps they have obligations to others, we fans aren't the center of the universe ;)
NOT the center of the universe?? When did THAT happen? lol!

Only two questions:

WHEN and

HOW

Sorry for the caps, but as they are such short, simple questions, I did not want them to get lost amongst the more erudite statements listed herein.
