Maya and Max have always had some of the best tools for data exchange between them, even before Autodesk bought them both.
I wish I was better-versed in which translator does a better job translating meshes, textures, animation and so on, but I'm not...yet. I know that each has its strong and weaker suits. So I'd just advise that you download all the best available translation plug-ins, install and try each until you find the one that gives you the best results for your needs. The good part is these plug-ins are all free. The bad part is that if you're using Max7, you might have to find a path that exports from the version of Maya you're using, through a compatible importer for Max7....could be tricky.
- Autodesk supports the FBX (originally FilmBox) export/import path.
- Collada has a long history you can read about on Wikipedia, but its path means that it's been through several sets of brains with different opinions, so there are several flavors of Collada:
* The "NextGen" Collada plugins http://colladamaya.sourceforge.net/news.php
See "Downloads" on this page for older versions of ColladaMaya:
http://www.collada.org/mediawiki/index.php/ColladaMaya
http://sourceforge.net/projects/colladamaya/files/
* There's "Straight" Collada
* And there's OpenCollada.
One of these, or some combination, will get you where you want to go!
Have fun, and let us know what you learn!
