So after getting really steamed over what a crappy experience I had trying to play Uru last night, I tried to post my frustrations here. I got a largely sympathetic response, and even a personal apology from a Cyan employee, so I'm satisfied, but I did get some vicious insults directed my way, including someone who questioned my devotion to my wife!
So... the best way I knew how to calm down was to log in (once I finally could) and kick Minkata's tushie. And I did it, and I'm going to share with you how I did it. For those who have played it, you know that there is a lot of walking to do, but I will show you how to beat it in under 20 minutes.
Do not click below unless you want all the answers...
You will need:
A stopwatch
A good eye
The map below
1.) Stand on top of the cage near the link-in point.
2.) Pick one of the five underground caves (the "end-points" of the red lines)
3.) Align your avatar at the center of the compass and point toward the cave you've selected
4.) Use this formula to determine how long it will take to reach the cave:
Code: (Distance to cave) / 125 * 5 = (Time in seconds) You can also use:
Code: (Distance to cave) / 625 * 26 = (Time in seconds)
Which I found to be a bit more accurate.
5.) Start your stopwatch and run toward the cave (you may need to start from the ground for some runs). Once the time is reached, stop and look around, the cave should be nearby.
6.) Enter the cave and press the stone.
7.) Leave the cave, and walk directly toward the constellation depicted on the map above, corresponding to the path to the cave you've selected.
8.) Soon, within a minute, you will see a symbol appear in front of you. Walk into it. When you do, the constellation you've been walking toward will move in the sky. When it stops, walk toward it again until you reach the cage near the link in point.
9.) Press the stone in the center of the cage (unsure if this is unnecessary for every constellation)
10.) Relto out and link back to Minkata
11.) Repeat steps 1-10 for each cave except the last, for which you will repeat steps 1-9
12.) Instead of Reltoing out, walk through the large symbol in front of you (it is a portal)
13.) In the Bahro cave, find the symbol on the wall (you may have to walk along the wall to see it. Press, and enjoy your donut.
For the record, I did not travel from point to point along the constellation before making my map (which is what I assume Cyan intended). Instead, after figuring out how the system worked after completing cave #1 (which is easy to stumble in to as I did) and working out the timing system, I left the game and spent a few hours creating my map using the code book in the Library, and ran the whole age in no time flat. I can't imagine doing cave #4 any other way!
I had a great time, and while now I've got no puzzles to solve for a month, that's my own fault for tearing through it. After the disappointment that was the pod age "puzzle," I grant many kudos to Cyan for creating in Minkata a classic age, in both aesthetic and puzzle design. It was both fiendish and beautiful.
I've used spoilers in the past to complete ages, so I figured that with an age that I've figured out myself, I owed it to provide a tool for others.
What a rush!
