To celebrate the final release of the Guild of Maintainers' Camp Bravo (an Age written by GoMa ADD Grandmaster Andy Legate), the Guild is sponsoring a competition open to all explorers.

A journal in Camp Bravo gives a little information about the Age and the planet it is on.
Quote:
ABOUT CAMP BRAVO
Camp Bravo has been set up on Tiw, one of five moons orbiting the ringed gas-giant Angmar. The other four moons appear to be small and rocky, like Earth's Moon.

Angmar itself orbits a Sun-like star at the same distance as the Earth orbits the Sun. This, together with Tiw's thick atmosphere, ensures a stable temperature here at Camp Bravo.

Angmar is sometimes visible in the sky above Camp Bravo, depending on the time of day or night.

Tiw statistics
Gravity -- 0.92 Earth Norm.
Atmospheric pressure -- 1012 mb
Atmospheric content -- 20% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, 2% other

BIOLOGY OF TIW
On initial link-in, a team of Maintainers explored as much of Tiw's surface as possible. No inhabitants were found, nor any evidence of past settlements.

The largest animals seem to be small bird-like creatures and small reptiles. However, there are many different types of insects.

Most of the surface appears to be rocky desert, so there is not much vegetation. This may have been different in the past as some coal deposits have been found.

Here's what we would like you to do. First, explore Camp Bravo by day and night -- either by using Uru:CC/ULM or by slide show/video (please pm me if you need this). Get to know the area thoroughly, because it might give you ideas of what to expect later, for the competition...

Next (in your imagination), kit yourself up with maintainer suit and backpack containing compass, water, food, rope and other essentials for a two-day hiking expedition. Choose a direction from the list below, and try to keep to that direction for the outwards journey. Start your expedition from the link-in point.

On your expedition, what do you see? What happens along the way? Did the initial team of maintainers miss anything interesting?

Report on your expedition in words, by photograph (aka computer image) or by sketch (scanned drawing). Post your reports and images on this thread on the Guild of Maintainers forum by 30 November 2008.

The best entries will be included in a journal for other explorers to enjoy in Camp Bravo.

Directions: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW
To find north, face the concrete wall from the link-in point.
Please post below your choice of direction. First come, first served!

And if anything isn't clear about the competition, do ask in this thread too.

Have fun, and good luck!

I was able to download the daytime version and make an initial survey, but I haven't been able to get the nighttime version to download successfully after two attempts this evening. I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks, semplerfi, raider7 and Robin.

Once you've decided, could you let us know which direction you each want to head off in, please? The idea behind this is to make sure there aren't conflicting reports in any particular direction.

By the way, if you're having problems downloading either version of Camp Bravo, do let us know over in the GoMa inspection forum. It might be that we can help sort it out. Thanks.

Ok wil do that Dot, I have had problems with the ULM as it downloads Andy's ages a part way through it says the connection was reset and some files didn't download properly in the Day time age so will post later to the Maintainers forum to see what is wrong with it.

Well... flymode won't get you very far!

That's why the competition says you need to journey in your imagination. Hopefully, aspects of the age visible in Camp Bravo will spark ideas of what the wider planet could be like, and you will be able to focus on and describe these in your report or show by image.

Hi there! Just a friendly mod note: you are absolutely free to discuss the contest in this thread, but we'd appreciate if you could move the more technical issues (ULM, downloading, installation) to more suited forums, like the GoW or GoMa websites. Thanks!

Thanks, Ian. :)

As I said above, if you're having problems with installing the age, please post in these threads on the GoMa forum:

Camp Bravo night time problems: http://www.guildofmaintainers.org/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=97&t=1000

Camp Bravo day time problems: http://www.guildofmaintainers.org/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=97&t=978

If you do that, we should be able to get back to you asap with detailed help.

Similarly, post there if you would like to discuss technical aspects.

Thanks!

Please post your reports here: Camp Bravo's moon: exploration reports
